WASHINGTON — Del. Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-D.C.) wants to know how much it's costing the government to deploy the National Guard to D.C.
In a letter sent Monday, the District's non-voting congressional delegate asked Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth and National Guard Bureau General Chief Steven Nordhaus to answer a series of questions probing the scope of the mission and its cost to American taxpayers.
“D.C. did not request or consent to the mass deployment of National Guard troops, who were recently authorized to carry weapons in the District despite D.C.’s crime rate being at a 30-year low,” Norton said in a press release Monday. “A tenet of our democracy is that the military does not engage in civilian law enforcement, and it is not trained to do so in any case, which puts servicememb
