In the dark, early morning hours of May 16, 2017, a concoction of alcohol, anti-government beliefs and delusions fueled a night of violence and chaos in Montana that ended the life of Broadwater County Deputy Mason Moore.
Prosecutors said Lloyd Mortimer Barrus and his son, Marshall, were camping and drinking at Canyon Ferry that night and put a “suicide mission” of anti-government and pro-militia views into motion.
Lloyd Barrus harbored suspicions about government and law enforcement, psychiatrists say, and for years experienced mental illnesses and delusions that manifested in beliefs he was either Jesus Christ or Michael the Archangel.
He had moved from Bakersfield, California to Gallatin County, Montana to help Marshall, who had recently been arrested for burglary and was laid off. T
