ATHENS, Ga. — The University of Georgia is pausing potential new member activity at Sigma Chi fraternity after it received a complaint regarding alleged hazing that is now being investigated by police.
A university spokesperson said the school received a third-party complaint, which then prompted a review by UGA's Greek Life and Student Affairs team. Because the fraternity is located off campus, the complaint was referred to the Athens-Clarke County Police Department for investigation.
According to a police report 11Alive obtained from ACCPD, the complaint alleges that the hazing included "incoming freshman were punched and forced to drink copious amounts of alcohol beyond their capacity" in two separate events that happened on Aug. 9 and Aug. 10.
