ATLANTA, Ga. (Atlanta News First) - University of Georgia (UGA) officials paused new member activity of UGA’s Sigma Chi fraternity as the Athens-Clarke County Police Department investigates hazing allegations.

“Pausing all potential new member activity for an individual organization while a review is conducted is standard operating procedure,” said Rod Guajardo, university spokesperson.

On Aug. 12, an Athens therapist filed a “mandatory report” with the university, detailing the hazing allegations.

The licensed marriage and family therapist emailed the university’s Office of Student Conduct, reporting incidents on Aug. 9 and 10.

“Incoming freshmen were punched and forced to drink copious amounts of alcohol beyond their capacity,” a police report about the complaint states.
