ATLANTA, Ga. (Atlanta News First) - Court picked back up Monday in the retrial of a west Georgia mayor related to his time as a state trooper.

Buchanan Mayor A.J. Scott faces two counts of serious injury by vehicle, two counts of second-degree homicide by vehicle, speeding, reckless driving, and violation of oath by a public officer, court records show. He’s accused of causing a crash that killed two teenage girls in 2015.

Scott took the stand on Monday morning. He told the jury that on the night of the crash he was driving towards Bremen to pick up his body-worn radio from another officer who had offered to charge the device’s dead battery.

Prosecutors say he was speeding down highway 27 to pick up that radio. That’s when Scott says a Nissan Altima pulled out in front of him.
