CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (KCRG) - Linn County officials approved the first reading of an ordinance that will help the process of bringing nuclear energy back to the area on Monday.
Supervisors emphasized the county does not decide if the old Duane Arnold Nuclear Power plant will reopen. That’s decided by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission or NRC.
They set standards for the design, construction, and operation of nuclear facilities.
But the first reading of the ordinance that was passed Monday does allow the county to have some oversight and allows regulations to be in place at a local level.
