GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — With very little rain expected the rest of this week, fire departments are reminding people to be careful when setting off fireworks over the Labor Day holiday.

It's one of four holidays in the state when it's legal to do so on your own property. It's legal to use fireworks on the Saturday and Sunday before Labor Day, between 11 a.m. and 11:45 p.m.

Grand Rapids Fire Marshall Bill Smith said fireworks can be dangerous for people, pets and property.

Smith said over the Fourth of July weekend, fireworks combined with dry conditions triggered 18 fires, causing $80,000 in property damage.

He also said it's easy to injure yourself while using fireworks. He said the most common mistake people make is picking up a firework when it doesn't go off and thinking it's a dud
