KALKASKA COUNTY, MI -- Two men and two 5-year-old children were rescued after they got lost in a swamp in Northern Michigan.

According to the Kalkaska County Sheriff’s Office, the search for the group began around 12:52 a.m. on Sunday after a woman reported they didn’t return to the Lake Skegemog boat launch.

Deputies began searching the area and were eventually joined by a Michigan State Police Aviation Unit and the Michigan Department of Natural Resources after sunrise.

Conservation officers eventually spotted smoke along the shoreline on the far southeast side of Lake Skegemog while patrolling in a boat. The group told officers that they had gotten lost and that their only cell phone had run out of battery.

All four were rescued, medically cleared and released, deputies said.
