VIRGINIA CITY — The Madison County Sheriff’s Office and Northern Rockies Complex Incident Management Team 6 have identified the firefighter who died Sunday on the Bivens Creek fire as Ruben Gonzales Romero of Keizer, Oregon.

Romero died of cardiac arrest, according to a Sunday release from the agencies.

Romero had more than 20 years of wildland firefighting experience and was on a Type 2 crew with TJ Contracting LLC, per the release. He served primarily as a sawyer, a firefighter who fells and cuts trees and brush with a chainsaw, as part of a 20-person crew and brought significant experience and wisdom to the fire line and the people with whom he worked, the agencies said.
