JACKSON, Mich. (WILX) - More than 60 animals are now in the care of the Jackson County Animal Shelter after a family in Wayne County reached out for help.

Officials say 67 small-breed dogs and one cat were removed from a River Rouge home last week. Of those, 59 dogs and the cat were taken to Jackson County. Shelter leaders say this wasn’t a criminal case, but rather a situation where the number of pets simply became overwhelming for the family.

“Luckily, we have the space to be able to do it,” said Lydia Sattler, animal services director of Jackson County. “If this was 60 large dogs, we would be talking a whole different story, but being that they were so tiny, we were able to have the space for them.”
