LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WAVE) - Equine fatalities at horse racing tracks across the country jumped more than 50 percent in the second quarter, compared to last year, according to a new report from the Horseracing Integrity and Safety Authority (HISA).

And the numbers indicate the problem is hitting home at Churchill Downs, where six horses died from race-related injuries in 2024.

In 2025, seven horses died by the end of June.

Compared to the same quarter last year, the rate of horses dying from race-related injuries at Churchill Downs has more than tripled, according to the HISA report.
