ASTORIA, Queens (PIX11) — The Queens community is gathering together on Wednesday to remember the victims of a deadly car crash.
On Tuesday, Aug. 12, an 84-year-old man drove into the back of a food cart while two locals were chatting with the owner of the business.
The speeding car struck Joaquin Venancio-Mendez, 41, and 70-year-old Santiago Baires. Both died from severe trauma suffered in the crash, as well as the driver.
Venancio-Mendez managed a local discount tire shop and was well respected in the community.
The vigil, hosted by Council Member Tiffany Cabán, Transportation Alternatives, Families for Safe Streets, and local community members, will take place at the corner of 19th Avenue and 42nd Street, the same area where the crash occurred.
