TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WCTV) - The head of a group that spearheaded the creation of colorful crosswalks at schools across Leon County met with the state Department of Transportation Monday afternoon.
The head of the Knight Creative Communities Institute, Betsy Couch, says data shows that since the raised crosswalks went in on Dempsey Mayo Road in November 2023, speeding declined as much as 23% on the roadway.
She said she is disappointed to see the crosswalk art being removed.
“It’s very disheartening and sad to see that something that children, families and seniors all made possible be removed overnight,” she said.
Couch said during the Monday afternoon meeting between KCCI and the Florida DOT, the FDOT told KCCI all crosswalk art must be removed by Sept. 4.
