SMITH COUNTY, Texas (KETK) - The ride on some of the most congested roads in East Texas may soon be getting a little bit smoother after Governor Greg Abbott announced the 2026 Unified Transportation Program.

The program is worth than $146 billion dollars and consists of many projects being done in partnership with the Texas Department of Transportation. The projects still have a long road ahead of them with completion dates varying between 2029 and 2035.

The Unified Transportation Program will improve roads all across the state. East Texans can look forward to State Highway 31 widening to four lanes in Gregg and Smith counties, Interstate 20 interchange improvements in Gregg county and re-done frontage roads near Toll 49 and Highway 69 in Smith County.
