LAFAYETTE, La. (KLFY) -- Louisiana State Police discuss their partnership in the "Sudden Impact" program.

This program aims to teach high schoolers, through visually graphic mock crashes and heartbreaking stories of loss, the importance of driving safely before they hit the road.

The program was developed by University Medical Center in 1999. Since, it has been nationally recognized and has won awards. Their main goal, however, is to continue to save lives by reaching kids early, before they start driving.

"So, we start with our class portions and teaching the kids the dangers of impaired and distracted driving and what can happen when they get behind the wheel," said Trooper First Class Peggy Bourque.
