From students to parents, neighbors gave the Claremont school board an earful Monday night at Stevens High School, pressing for solutions to the district's budget problem.

"And you knew we were in debt and you're not doing anything until now when we are literally in the hole," said Stevens High School senior Lilianna Clarke.

With classes set to begin Thursday, the district faces a multi-million-dollar deficit estimated between $1 million and $5 million.

"It's not fair. You're going to have so many devasted athletes and drama students and art students," one attendee said.

The district's attorney has warned there may not be enough money to continue past next month.

"The first plan, cut as much as we can. Reduce as much operating expenses as we can," said attorney Jim O'Shaughnessy.
