PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE)– Gov. Dan McKee and RIPTA CEO Christopher Durand have completed a new budget framework that they say will prevent route eliminations and driver layoffs throughout the state.

In a joint statement, the two said that the budget plan would help close RIPTA’s operating deficit, stabilize its long-term financial footing and “chart a responsible path forward.”

The agreement does still mean that many lines will see reduced frequency.

This new framework comes after the original budget plan saw intense public backlash and a campaign against the cuts, which happened due to an $18 million funding gap.

The Save RIPTA campaign’s organizer said in a statement that they were glad that routes would no longer be cut, but said that more work needed to be done.
