CASTLE ROCK, Colo. — Dale Heath left his Castle Rock home on Aug. 4 for what his wife thought would be another routine trip to renew his immigration paperwork. By that afternoon, he was calling from the Aurora Immigration and Customs Enforcement detention facility to say he would not be coming home.

“It was a very like, ‘Hey, I’ll be right back. I’m going to run and renew my paperwork,’” his wife, Kelli Heath, recalled. “He honestly didn’t even give us a hug or kiss goodbye because it was such a routine activity to go take care of... It was like he was going to the grocery store.”

Dale, 42, immigrated from England in 1991 and has lived in Colorado for nearly a decade. He and his wife run Castle Rock Carpet Care, which they temporarily closed after his detention. He also volunteered as a
