The New Bedford Park and Ride has a new solar canopy installed.

It's expected to generate $24,100 in energy savings every year.

It's one of two solar canopy projects installed recently at park and rides.

NEW BEDFORD — State-run "Park and Ride" lots can be found throughout Massachusetts and beyond, offering a free place for motorists to pick up public transportation. But now, New Bedford's lone Park and Ride — located on Mt. Pleasant Street, not far from Kings Highway — also doubles as a savings generator to benefit the commonwealth.

According to the state Department of Energy Resources , the three-part solar canopy now installed above the New Bedford Park and Ride's main parking rows will produce over 688,069 kilowatt-hours of electricity within its first year in service, and 16.
