Monroe County Sheriff Troy Goodnough launched the School Bus Red Light Safety Campaign ahead of the new school year.
The campaign's goal is to raise awareness about the dangers of illegally passing stopped school buses, and to protect students travelling to and from school.
"The safety of our students is our highest priority," the sheriff's office said in a statement. "We are urging all drivers to pay attention, slow down, and stop when school bus lights are flashing."
A one-day survey conducted by Michigan school bus drivers in May 2024 reported that motorists illegally passed a school bus 1,362 times. Of those illegal passes, 46 were on the right-hand side of the bus, where students board and depart the bus.
The sheriff's office offered the following safety reminders for drivers:
