COLUMBUS, Ohio — Ohio State football was preparing for an early-October matchup against Penn State when Allison Butler, a former OSU cheerleader and now the wife of ESPN’s Kirk Herbstreit , approached her coach Judy Bunting.

Many in her shoes have been asked a similar question in the 29 years since, but in 1996, this was unprecedented.

Lee Corso , an analyst for ESPN’s College GameDay , wanted to use the Brutus Buckeye headgear when making his pick before the game, Butler said.

“It was just really new,” Bunting said, “and unheard of.”
