Coach Brian Kelly drew the proverbial line of demarcation once LSU had collected the signatures from its 2024 freshman class.

It was December 2023, and you could see the program transforming, Kelly said at the time , from a team that needed to stockpile transfers just so it could field a roster into one that could pick and choose which positions it would ask those players to fill.

But how many transfers would be ideal? Where was the sweet spot? Was there a magic number that would bring about some healthy competition without nudging away key returners? And if so, what was it?
