SOUTH PORTLAND, Maine — A water main break in South Portland shut down a stretch of Broadway near Huntress Avenue on Tuesday, forcing traffic detours in both directions.

The break impacted the entire roadway, South Portland police said in a 4:58 a.m. social media post . All eastbound and westbound traffic was being diverted between Main Street and Church Street.

Police described the water main break as "significant."

Officials expect the closure to last for an extended period and urged drivers to seek alternate routes.
