President Donald Trump and Democratic Maryland Gov. Wes Moore are having a war of words, and Moore is making it clear that he wouldn't welcome a militarized federal takeover of Baltimore.

Trump, during a White House press conference on Monday, August 25, accused Moore of being a flip-flopper who gave him high praise when they met at an Army/Navy college football game in Maryland in December 2024.

Trump told reporters, "He came over to me, hugged me, shook my hand. He said, 'Sir, you're the greatest president of my lifetime.' I said, 'It's really nice that you say that. I'd love you to say it publicly, but I don't think you can do that.'"

Fox News' Will Cain tried to back up Trump's description of that encounter by showing a clip from August 2024. But that clip, the Daily Beast's Ewan Palmer notes, didn't prove that Trump's description of his conversation with Moore was accurate.

The clip shows Moore being polite and friendly to Trump and shaking his hand — but he's not obsequious in the way that Trump claimed.

The clips shows Moore telling Trump, "Good to see you," but he doesn't hug Trump or describe him as "the greatest president of my lifetime."

Palmer explains, "Trump and Moore did briefly discuss efforts to rebuild the Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore, which collapsed in March after a cargo ship crashed into it. Moore suggested it could reopen during Trump's second term with federal funding. 'We'll help you out,' Trump told Moore. Cain even admitted that Trump appears to have completely made up parts of the conversation after playing the footage."

Cain told viewers, "We didn't hear there 'greatest president ever,' but we did hear a lot of enthusiasm and 'So excited to meet you, Mr. President! Who's telling the truth? We'll let you decide."

Cain's segment is drawing some discussion on X, formerly Twitter.

Former NBC Universal exec Mike Sington tweeted, "Trump's imaginary friend. Fox News airs video proving Trump is a liar. Maryland Governor Wes Moore never said to Trump, 'You're the greatest president of my lifetime' upon meeting him at football game, as Trump claims."

News Corpse, a frequent critic of right-wing media, posted, "This Fox News hack ran a video of Gov. Wes Moore NOT telling Trump that he is 'the greatest president' ever. Then asks his viewers if Moore told Trump that. Watch your own f—— video, Bozo! Do you really think your viewers are that stupid? Well, they are watching Fox, so..."
