The Massachusetts state education department failed to track child abuse and neglect cases that involved licensed educators for several years, potentially allowing children to remain in harmful education settings, according to a newly released state audit.
According to the audit released on Tuesday, the failure began in February 2020 when the state Department of Elementary and Secondary Education and the Department of Children and Families stopped following their usual information-sharing procedures and continued undetected for nearly four years.
