Josh Heupel praises SEC’s nine-game schedule shift

Tennessee coach welcomes added challenge, calls move “exciting for everybody.”

For years, SEC coaches have fielded the same question at media days: When will the league add a ninth game? Tennessee head coach Josh Heupel no longer has to answer it. With the SEC officially expanding to a nine-game conference schedule beginning in 2026, Heupel made it clear he’s on board.

“One last question I gotta worry about getting from you guys at media days,” Heupel said. “We finally checked one off the box.”

The change ends a run that began in 1992, when the SEC first adopted the eight-game format. For Heupel, it signals a new chapter for the nation’s toughest conference.
