GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer announced Tuesday that the state will provide up to $4 million to support the construction of 171 apartment units in Grand Rapids, part of a broader effort to address housing shortages across the state.
The project goes back to 2024 , when the Grand Rapids City Commission unanimously approved a rezoning ordinance for a block of the city to allow for apartments to be built. The initial plan called for a more than 180-unit apartment complex to be built at 301 Leonard Street, but that plan was scaled back slightly.
