KANSAS CITY, Mo. — The Kansas City, Kansas, mayor is speaking out after a police officer was killed during a police chase Tuesday morning.

KCK officer Hunter Simoncic died at the hospital after he was hit while trying to stop a car involved in a chase. The man accused of killing Simoncic has been arrested.

Tyrone Garner – the mayor of Kansas City, Kansas – spoke at a news conference Tuesday morning.

"It's another sad day here in Kansas City, Kansas," Garner said. "I feel the chief's pain; I feel the pain of our Kansas City, Kansas, police officers.

"We have a lot of good police officers here… He was one of them, doing his job to keep this community safe."

He called Simoncic's killing "senseless" and "unnecessary."

"It hurts me as mayor," Garner said during Tuesday's news conference.
