KANSAS CITY, Mo. — On Monday, a Leavenworth County jury found Alvaro E. Pertuz, 25, guilty of aggravated battery.

According to court records, Pertuz was charged on July 25, 2022, after an incident inside the Leavenworth County Jail. Court documents state that Pertuz was participating in a basketball game, when he jumped on the back of a fellow inmate and bit off the top of the victim's ear.

Pertuz was previously sentenced in August 2022 for throwing a rock and biting a Leavenworth police officer in 2021.

“County jails and correctional facilities have rules, and the law is still to be followed. Our office takes seriously any harm done to not only the staff, but to residents within these facilities," Leavenworth County Attorney Todd Thompson said in a news release on Tuesday.
