KANSAS CITY, Kan. (KCTV) - Officer Hunter Simoncic, who was tragically killed in the line of duty Tuesday morning, is being remembered for his bravery and character behind the badge.

Overnight, Simoncic was tragically run over by a fleeing suspect and died at the hospital.

At just 26, he was dedicated to his community, which he served for nearly two years as a police officer in Kansas City, Kansas.

Once a week, he would come to Banneker Elementary School to read and mentor students as part of the Lead to Read KC program.

“It’s definitely a dark moment for this community, and it’s a great loss,” said Radell Oakman, the coordinator for Lead to Read KC.

Oakman is also the wife of KCKPD Chief Karl Oakman, who watched firsthand as Simoncic became very passionate about the program.
