CINCINNATI (WXIX) - Last Friday against the Diamondbacks, Terry Francona weighed his options in the 10th inning. He had Will Benson available to pinch-run for catcher Jose Trevino. But if Francona made that move, that would have meant putting backup catcher Will Banfield in for his Major League debut in the bottom of the 10th with the ghost runner on second and the effectively wild Graham Ashcraft on the mound.
That wasn’t a fair spot to put Banfield in, so Francona stuck with Trevino on the bases. It didn’t work out as Trevino got caught trying to tag up, but the process made sense. All season, Francona has been fair with his players.
