The Fourth Criminal Sentencing Court of El Alto annulled an ordinary trial and requested that an accountability trial be initiated instead, which would take the case to the Legislative Branch, against Bolivian far-right leader Jeanine Áñez, who governed de facto after the 2019 coup against Evo Morales.
Áñez was charged with the deaths of civilians during the 2019 crisis in the Senkata area of El Alto, when she ordered security forces to use violence against protesters demanding justice for the coup.
The court's decision responds to an appeal for "incompetence exception" filed by Áñez's (2019-2020) defense, which requested a trial of responsibilities, a process reserved for high-ranking Bolivian officials that takes the case out of the ordinary courts and brings it to the legislature.
