NEW ORLEANS — Work is underway to rebuild a beloved landmark in New Orleans' Lower Ninth Ward.

The Katrina Memorial sat damaged and neglected on the Claiborne Avenue neutral ground as the 20th anniversary of the devastating storm approached.

After local developer and general contractor Peter Gardner saw our initial story documenting the memorial's condition, he decided to take action.

"When I saw the story, I thought it was a shame," Gardner said. "To me it was an easy small project that signals to the community that there are people who care. That's why I'm here doing it."

Gardner said his crew is using the original plans to refurbish the monument, which serves as a reminder of lives lost and a community's heartbreak.
