GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — Following months and anticipation and just over a month before a critical deadline to avoid a government shutdown, the Michigan House of Representatives has passed its proposal for a state budget for the next fiscal year that begins in October.
The passage marks a major step in the budget process, as many across the state have watched closely. The delay, which blew past a legal, but toothless deadline on July 1, has already begun to impact considerations and decisions for those like school districts beginning their years.
House leadership brought forth the proposal Tuesday afternoon and discharged it almost immediately, meaning it did not require reporting from the relevant House committee before receiving a vote on the House floor.
