OMAHA, Neb. (WOWT) - Service dogs play a critical role in our lives, from assisting in social services to helping our law enforcement officers.
Henry, Nebraska’s first official therapy dog in law enforcement, is just one of them. His handler, Jeff Kaiser with the Sarpy County Sheriff’s Office, told First Alert 6 that Henry’s special skill is sensing when someone is stressed.
“Your body makes a stress hormone called cortisol and he can smell if you’re having an excessive amount through a traumatic event,” Kaiser said. “His indicator is he will want to come up and lean.”
Service dog Tater with the Bellevue Police Department shares the same talent. In addition to helping his community, he also helps his handler, Officer Jonathan Hobbs, who’s a combat veteran.
