One person was killed and six others hurt in a shooting Tuesday afternoon near East Lake Street and Interstate 35W in south Minneapolis.

At a news conference, Police Chief Brian O’Hara said the shooter walked up to a group of people who were standing at the corner of East 29th Street and Clinton Avenue South and opened fire.

O’Hara said the attack was not random, and the killer fired about 30 rounds from a high-powered rifle.

“It’s more a weapon of war than something to be on the street here,” O’Hara said. “Just the damage that was done to the bodies of some of these victims is unspeakable. And thankfully we don't have more people that are dead from this incident.”

O’Hara said investigators are still trying to identify and locate the suspect, who ran from the scene.
