NATCHITOCHES, La. (KALB) - Los Adaes, a Louisiana symbol of New Spain, was at one point the capital of Texas and a hub for collaboration between French, Spanish and Native American communities.

The original site for Los Adaes was established in 1717 as a small mission church for the Spanish.

“That was actually part of a return trip from Louis Juchereau de St. Denis , who’s the original founder of Natchitoches, who had gone to Mexico to try to open up trade with the Spanish, got arrested, met his wife in prison and then returned back towards what would become Natchitoches,” shared Logan Schlatre with the Cane River National Heritage Area .
