WELLINGTON – Australian police on Wednesday identified a suspect who shot and killed two police officers and seriously wounded a third as the search for the shooter entered day two in a vast, remote rural area in the country's southeast.

People were urged to stay indoors. Police said 56-year-old Dezi Freeman was heavily armed and experienced in wilderness survival skills, Victoria’s Chief Commissioner of Police Mike Bush told reporters.

The shooting happened on Tuesday, when 10 armed police officers tried to execute a search warrant at Freeman's property in Porepunkah, a town of just over 1,000 people located 320 kilometers (200 miles) northeast of Melbourne.
