Sacramento County detectives have reopened a 1997 child sex assault case after suspect John Caleb Cowpert gave investigators new details while in custody in El Dorado County. The case, involving a 3-year-old girl at a family gathering, had gone inactive at the time due to lack of corroboration. Cowpert, 50, was arrested in July and is being held at the Sacramento County Main Jail on $400,000 bail. Detectives believe there may be additional victims and are urging anyone with information to come forward.
