The Toledo Mud Hens were unable to hold on to a late lead Tuesday as the St. Paul Saints hit a two-run home run in the ninth inning to secure a 5-4 win in the series opener at Fifth Third Field.
With the Saints trailing by one and down to their final out in the top of the ninth, Gabriel Gonzalez launched a ball deep over the left-field wall for what proved to be the go-ahead run.
It was the Mud Hens who took the lead in the early going thanks to an RBI triple by Akil Baddoo and an RBI single by Justyn-Henry Malloy in the first inning.
Gage Workman’s solo home run in the second made it 3-0 Toledo.
But St. Paul responded with a three-run fourth inning to tie things up. DaShawn Keirsey, Jr., plated a run on a fielder’s choice play and Gabriel Gonzalez scored a pair with a bases-loaded sin
