Instead of celebrating his 35th birthday by his side, Perla Contreras spent the afternoon kneeling at her husband’s gravesite in Balch Springs, decorating it with balloons and a banner.
The husband, father and die-hard Cowboys fan was shot to death last month outside a family gathering for their son’s baptism, and minutes after they sang happy birthday to their 4-year-old daughter.
“The last memory I have of him is him hugging her, singing happy birthday to her,” Contreras said.
Balch Springs police said they were called to a home on Peachtree Road just before 12:30 a.m. on July 27.
An arrest warrant says 19-year-old Leonardo Campos, a distant relative, “had been seen firing a handgun in the driveway area.”
