FITCHBURG, Wis. (WKOW) -- Fitchburg is moving forward with construction of its new police building.

On Tuesday, the Common Council voted to award the construction contract to J.P. Cullen. The project has faced setbacks over its expected price, but after city leaders approved $40 million, bids came in under budget.

Bidders said they anticipated higher costs because of post-COVID-19 pricing, but noted more favorable bidding conditions helped lower the numbers.

Fitchburg Mayor Julia Arata-Fratta expressed gratitude for residents' patience during the long process.

The approval came after hours of discussion and questions for builders. The project has been in the works for years, with cost estimates dating back to 2015.
