BEXAR COUNTY, Texas — A unit within the Bexar County Sheriff's Office investigates cases involving animals. The specialized unit is known as Animal Crimes Enforcement. The team is made up of deputies with backgrounds in animal care and livestock handling.
"We always hope for the best outcome in these bad situations," said Deputy Adam Turbeville, a member of the unit. "The majority of us are avid animal owners or horsemen ourselves. That experience helps a lot."
The unit's most common call involves aggressive dogs. Turbeville said most of the calls are dogs chasing children at bus stops. However, a recent call involving an abandoned horse is a case Turbeville won't forget.
