A new rule that aims to make owning an electric vehicle (EV) easier is now in place. In May the Government announced that it was cutting red tape for both drivers and businesses in England with immediate effect.
It means that planning permission is no longer needed to install an EV chargepoint. The announcment from the Department for Transport applies to private residential driveways, workplaces and public streets, meaning a potential improvement for those who do not have a driveway as well.
Previously, there had been reports of it taking up to nine months to obtain planning permission from councils for public installations. Boosting public charging infrastructure is seen as vital to persuade more drivers – particularly those without off-road parking – to switch to electric motoring.
