Expansion plans for Leicester Royal Infirmary (LRI) will “improve” local healthcare services, planning officers have ruled. The scheme will see a new level added to the Osborne Building at the Havelock Street site, in the city centre.

The University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust (UHL) has said the work will help it meet a growing need for cancer treatment. The trust added in its submission to Leicester City Council that its current facilities at the LRI cannot keep up with “increasing demand” on the service.

The new floor, now approved by the authority, will house a new aseptic pharmacy where treatments can be prepared. An aseptic pharmacy is a sterile environment where medications such as chemotherapy drugs and other intravenous drugs can be safely made ready.
