IOWA CITY, Iowa (KCRG) - Over the last decade, more people have been making the choice to abstain from alcohol.

It’s part of a new national Gallup study , but Iowa might not be seeing the same progress.

The Gallup Survey shows that only 54% of US adults drink alcohol. That’s the lowest in nearly 90 years. It’s a change driven by a surprising demographic.

Merrilee Ramsey of Solon spent decades socializing with friends on the weekends. But after so many years, she said her relationship with alcohol had changed.

“It became more difficult for me to get from weekend to weekend without needing that drink,” she said.

Vodka was her drink of choice. She would have six or seven shots a day.
