State and local officials gathered at Salisbury Beach State Reservation on Tuesday to honor Robert "Boots" Chouinard, a 101-year-old veteran who has dedicated his life to serving his community.

Before serving on the beaches of Normandy in World War II, Chouinard protected beachgoers in Salisbury as a lifeguard after graduating high school. After the war, Chouinard returned home and worked as a school teacher, newspaper columnist and head lifeguard at Salisbury Beach for 15 years. Latest Forecast
