EAST LANSING — When Jonathan Smith announced Michigan State football’s five captains during a team meeting near the end of August camp, he read Sam Edwards’ name last.
It had nothing to do with Edwards’ standing on MSU’s football team — not even as a walk-on reserve linebacker and jack of all trades on special teams. No player received more votes from his teammates than Edwards, the former Lansing Catholic High School star, who was originally part of Mark Dantonio’s final recruiting class at MSU.
