Criminal justice reformers in Oklahoma have spent years encouraging state leaders to modify the state's bail laws , but a new executive order from President Donald Trump could dash those efforts.
The executive order requires the U.S. attorney general to identify states and local jurisdictions that have "substantially eliminated cash bail as a potential condition of pretrial release from custody for crimes that pose a clear threat to public safety and order." Those crimes, according to the president, include offenses involving violent, sexual, or indecent acts, or burglary, looting or vandalism.
The punishment for a state or city eliminating cash bail could be termination of grants, contracts and other sources of federal funds controlled by the president.
