Benedict Cumberbatch tries to "scare" himself professionally by taking on unfamiliar roles. The Doctor Strange actor, who is best known for appearing in period films, serious dramas and Marvel movies, gets to show off a new side of himself in a rare comedic role in The Roses. In the loose remake of 1989's The War of the Roses, Cumberbatch and Olivia Colman play Theo and Ivy Rose, a couple whose marriage falls apart as their resentments, failures and successes build up over the years. During an interview with Variety, the British actor acknowledged that the dark comedy is a different look for him, and explained that he's trying to keep his career interesting by exploring new genres and types of characters. "I try to sort of scare myself a little bit with the new," he shared. "And this comedy has been in the works for a while, as has working with one of my best friends, so both of those things are good and new and fresh." Cumberbatch, who also produced the film, added that Theo Rose was unlike his unusual characters. "I don't know that he's very much like anyone I've played before," he continued. "He's sort of very emotionally intuitive, he's impulsive, he's very pragmatic, he's capable of a great depth of love and hurt and pain and hatred. He's a good dresser, and he's quite well groomed." The Roses, also starring Andy Samberg and Kate McKinnon, will be released in cinemas on Friday.
